Sparks and Emotions Fly in Gigi Perez's "Chemistry"

Gigi Perez is no stranger to yearning. Her 2024 breakout hit "Sailor Song" is drenched in it, and is a big part of what drew fans in. In her latest single, “Chemistry,” Perez is able to give in to her yearning and emotions, but still a thread of doubt and fear runs through the relationship at the heart of the matter. “Chemistry” opens with distorted instrumentation that comes to an abrupt halt before an acoustic guitar and Perez’s sweet vocals come in. The simple instrumentation complements the vulnerability in the lyrics as Perez sings, “Oh, chemistry is rare / Fucked me on the stairs / For once in my life / I didn’t care that I was scared.”

Despite finally feeling free enough to leave behind her fear, Perez still recognizes the feeling, calling it a beast inside of her. She goes on to sing, “It’s creepin up / I’m sweepin up / all of these things that I have done.” As Perez sings “things that I have done,” the song bursts into a grander instrumentation with drums adding a driving beat of passion to the mix. The uptempo instrumentation continues throughout the song as Perez dives deeper into the relationship and the challenges being faced, including a disapproving mother and the fact that the relationship is a “secret life.”

The bridge brings back a more minimalistic instrumentation as Perez confronts her lover telling them, “Oh, down the drain you go / You poor, unfortunate soul / You got yourself involved with someone you really didn't know / But what I'd like to do / Is make a deal with you.” The single closes with the same lyrics it opened with, “Chemistry is rare.”

“Chemistry” is Perez’s first release of what is set to be a busy year. The singer will embark on her first headline tour in April and May, and will be opening for Hozier on his 'Unreal Unearth' North American tour from June to September. We can’t wait to see what else 2025 will bring for this rising indie-pop star.
