French-Algerian singer Claire Chicha, better known as spill tab, kicks off the year with new music, teasing what’s sure to be an excitingly experimental debut album. The LA-based artist’s latest single “De Guerre” is a glitchy, grungy, frenetic blend of chaos and ecstasy. It’s not a party anthem per se, but an indulgent dive into a messy, sweaty frenzy, free of inhibitions or anxieties.

The song’s intro features crunchy, glitchy guitars and heavy drums that feel like you’re stumbling and swaying, preparing to unleash chaos into the night. The instrumental transitions into a blend of garage and hyperpop (hyper-garage if you will) with Chicha’s soft-sung vocals dancing atop, singing, “Prisonnier de guerre / Dans le vide / J'me lache / Laisse-moi à terre / J'ferai de moi-même un animal,” or for those of you on day one of your Duolingo journey, “Prisoner of war / In the void / I let go/ lLave me on the ground / I will make an animal of myself.” The chaos subsides into a static-y piano finale, concluding a night of debaucherous activity that may soon be forgotten.

“De Guerre” is spill tab’s first release of the year, but second single in the lead-up to her debut album. You can listen to “De Guerre” below and read our interview with spill tab in the latest issue of the zine here.
