Days into her first headline tour, Ashe unveils The Favors, a project with frequent collaborator FINNEAS, announcing the release of their debut album, The Dream, out this September with first single “The Little Mess You Made.” A power ballad that exceeds expectation, with its heart worn on its sleeve, the track enraptures listeners upon the first strike of piano keys, complemented by a groovy snare drum (and hello, strings?) that transports us into the golden age of classic bands. (ABBA, Fleetwood Mac, you already know.)

What would feel like a traditional homage is a beautiful reimagination, and balances a timeless tenderness that accompanies both Ashe and Finneas’ previous works, especially together

With a whimsical music video tied to the single, the kaleidoscopic introduction to The Favors is exciting and invigorating. Directed by Scott Rudmore, and seamlessly interlacing film and digital video, the video is best watched before explained, beautifully capturing the sensationalism of hyper-scrutiny (through many, many cameras & flashes) under the spotlight in a wistful chorus, “Say when // You’ll never see me again// the little mess you made is all over the news//the littlest mistake can leave the darkest bruise//”

As the song progresses, the track crescendos past a shimmering, otherworldly harmony through the chorus into a call-and-response bridge, “You can have your cake// Who gets all the blame// You can have mine too// I guess it’s up to you.” and closes with the reverent warmth of their vocals, a juxtaposition to the cold, foreboding finish. “Say when//You’ll never see me again.”

“The Little Mess You Made.” is a striking debut and is an exciting look at what The Favors have to offer, with the grace and charisma of two powerhouse artists at the forefront, there is no question that the supergroup of decades past is making a beautiful comeback this year.
