In the emerging hip-hop scene, few rappers are as eccentric or entertaining as Quadie Diesel. Over the past year we've watched his career soar to new heights, releasing a handful of singles, two records, and even appearing on tracks with Key! and the Working on Dying roster. This month Quadie Diesel returns with a new single and video, "Gangster," that features his signature writing and visual style that is eclectic, chaotic, and fun as hell.
Filmed in a LA Airbnb with some star-studded friends like Earl Sweatshirt, Na-Kel Smith, Matt Ox & Key!, Quadie Diesel provides fans with a crazy new video alongside his newest banger. The New Jersey-born rapper spares no expense for the "Gangster" video, decorating the screen with the affordances that only someone of his status could conjure up - expensive cars, designer clothes, and plenty of female guests. The abstraction in Quadie Diesel’s writing does not just sound like a rapper trying to be different for his own sake, however, as there seems to be a careful creative process governing his artistic method.
With lines that end long after the next one has begun like "How the fuck Quadie in something / Getting top from your favorite thot / How the fuck you find that pressure / How they release you from bars and you charged like a Tesla," Quadie Diesel pushes aside hip-hop's conventional structures of rhythm and timing to create something that is truly unique. Tracks like "Backstreet" represent a primal and enjoyable section of hip-hop that doesn't care about upholding the status quo through someone else's rules - instead opting to be themselves surrounded in good company, and to make something dope in the process.
"Backstreet" is Quadie Diesel's second release of this year, though after observing how busy he has kept himself since 2020, fans can be certain that more bangers are on the way. With more collaborative tracks coming down the pipeline, 2021 is shaping up to be Quadie's year, so hopefully "Backstreet" isn't the last video we'll see from him.
