Wallows' "Your New Favorite Song" Cruises Into Dreamy Indie Pop Waters

SoCal mellow is a mood—one instantly recognizable and honed in on by bands like LANY, Transviolet, and now Wallows, who recently released "Your New Favorite Song," a single on the cusp of dreamy indie pop and slightly removed from their garage soft rock spectrum. Immediately gooey and lavender-scented, the song is comforting, cascading with languid saxophone blows instead of synth stabs like the other bands mentioned, and a fluttering electric guitar that transports you to your choice destination for relaxation.

Like a steamboat steadfast in its course, "Your New Favorite Song" maintains a steady rhythmic motion, layering slowly to add a dreamy aesthetic ambiance to the track, with lyrics that serve as the cherry on top, adding romance and a hint of nostalgia. If it all sounds familiar, it's the same recipe bands from this La La Land neck of the woods have used to compose pieces that charge, as the admission price, a disconnect from the world—and to pay it is a privilege.

Having run the indie scene gamut for the better part of the last decade before becoming Atlantic Records-signed artists, Wallows is experienced and free to refine their sound. In "Your New Favorite Song," they move closer to the above-described chill mechanics, creating something slightly different from what their fans may immediately recognize. Naturally, this makes the new single a song, with its plump harmonies, stands apart and becomes a favorite by default for die-hard fans—well played on the title, Wallows.

Whether this is a one-off or the start of a new direction for the group remains to be seen, but one thing is certain: it never hurts to take a leap of faith and stick the landing. "Your New Favorite Song" could have easily gone the other way, but as it stands, it appears to have the steam to power through an ocean of opportunities for the group in 2025 (they are headed on the road with plenty of North American stops) and may even take them to the promised land.
