AG Club Reintroduce Themselves Anew With ‘Impostor Syndrome’

Who is AG Club? It’s a question that super-duo Jody Fontaine and Baby Boy of East Bay collective AG Club poise in their anxiously-awaited album Impostor Syndrome. It’s a radical inquiry spurred forth by the group's rapid success and one they attempt to answer in a myriad of ways over the course of 13 electrifying, genre-jumping tracks that paint AG Club as trendsetters thriving in their own lane.

Executive produced by Vic Wainstein (Frank Ocean, Tyler, the Creator, Mac Miller) and featuring additional production from DJ Dahi, Gabriel Garzón-Montano, and Junior Varsity, Impostor Syndrome at no point feels like it’s treading familiar waters. Delving deep into a host of experimental sounds and flavors—a directional shift that was first singled by lead single “TRU RELIGION, which combines the emotional catharsis of a Dijon B-side and the alternative fervor of euphoric indie rock—this new chapter of AG Club may their most difficult to define yet exciting yet.

Even when linking up with familiar collaborators Sam Truth, Glen the Saiyan, and redveil and “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell,” there’s newfound, palpable energy to be found here. Over a jazz-influenced piano breakdown and a punch-drunk groove, the group trade breakneck verses that effortlessly skate across the idiosyncratic production. As “Candice” and its heaven-ascending falsettos that call to mind the latter works of Bon Iver close out Impostor Syndrome, it’s unclear if AG Club land on a singular answer for who they are. And that’s likely for the best. Because as each track in their latest effort proves, AG Club is a collective without ceilings or constrictions, and to play by the rules now would be a fool’s errand.
