Flo Milli Emanates Success in New Video for "Roaring 20s"
This month, one of hip-hop's most promising newcomers returns with an opulent visual for her latest single. Best known for her debut record Ho, Why Is You Here? Flo Milli has decided to treat fans to a new video for "Roaring 20s." Ever since 2019's "Beef FloMix," Flo Milli has been quickly making a name for herself with her aggressive raps and spirited writing. Though the past year has been a difficult one, Flo Milli consistently stays on course for success - and "Roaring 20s" is further proof of this. Complete with creative cinematography and 19th Century costumes, Flo Milli's newest video shows that she is here to stay.
As the track title suggests, "Roaring 20s" is a song obsessed with change, success, and potential. The 1920s were a time of prosperity and change, and just like Flo Milli's burgeoning career a century later, both were forces to be reckoned with. On this track, the Alabama rapper reflects on the futility of our modern struggles, and despite the forces holding Flo Milli back, she was still able to succeed. Whether it was social discrimination or the pandemic, Flo Milli unapologetically raps "Stupid shit, it’s just a double standard / I made my own lane and I took advantage / You can’t hate on p*ssy if it rule the planet." Flo Milli's boisterous writing is complimented by Kenny Beats' production, with booming bass signals being synthesized with a sample from "Fiddler on the Roof." It is almost as if Flo Milli is rolling her eyes at Chaim Topol's iconic phrase "If I was a rich man," as she is obviously much more concerned with achieving her dreams than fantasizing about them.
The video for Flo Milli's "Roaring 20s" does a phenomenal job of drawing parallels to the track's themes and imagery. Directed by Child (Big Sean, Janelle Monae), the monochromatic first act is filled with scenes of Flo Milli gazing in the mirror draped in lavish accessories and throwing cash while wearing a white suit. The second act turns on its heels and features Flo Milli dancing in an elegant outfit with a squad of backup dancers, while onlooking men drop their wallets and tongues. Despite the reversal of gender roles between the two acts, the main consistency is that Flo Milli seems only concerned with herself. Like many Flo Milli tracks, there's a myriad of lines addressing her haters, but this time around her writing is more humorous, reflecting on her own success and her haters' presumed lack thereof.
Though fans were given Flo Milli's debut record barely half a year ago, it is hard not to be hungry for more after the video for "Roaring 20s." While new music is certainly on Flo Milli's horizon, this video is certainly a good reminder to circle back and prepare for the next entry in Flo Milli's discography in the meantime. Whenever her next project drops, you can be sure to expect a mass of devoted fans will be keeping it on repeat.
