Oliver Tree Taught Fans to be Unapologetically Themselves at Los Angeles Valentine's Day Show
Oliver Tree taught us all to be our own Valentine at the Roxy on Feb. 14. His current, fully-sold out "Ugly Is Beautiful" tour encourages us to be more like him–unapologetically ourselves. An Oliver Tree show is not your average show. He is probably the weirdest person I have ever seen live, but also probably one of the best. He whipped out a giant Juul, cartwheeled and scootered on stage, and danced like your 50-year-old Dad. I looked around and everyone had their eyes peeled on Oliver Tree, not at their significant others. Truly magnetic, he preaches a genuine message with every move he makes.
At the front of the venue, there was a cut-out of Oliver Tree wearing his bowl cut, his red sunglasses, and his pink and purple Patagonia jacket. Fans stopped and took pictures with it throughout the entire night. The Roxy Theater in West Hollywood was fit for Oliver Tree, roomy but intimate enough for Oliver Tree to bounce around. Couples swarmed the stage, but so did groups of bros in skater tees and millennials with blue and pink hair. Oliver Tree started his set with heavy guitar and army green lights, performing "Forget It," his song with Getter. He dabbed at the end of the song, wearing the exact outfit as in the cut-out. He belted out "Alien Boy," and jumped up and down, his cult following screaming the lyrics. A little later, he threw out bowl-cut wigs to the crowd, almost identical to his.
When he broke out "Welcome to LA," he sported a fedora and a vest. The red lights, infectious saxophone, and his catchy rapping made listeners swoon and smile. He did his infamous dance moves, moved across the stage like an Egyptian, flailing his arms up and down. He brought out his ski goggles, a slight nod to the bros in the building, and his camo hat. The crowd favorites were "All That," and then his new single, "Hurt." This cross-genre single was new for the audience, but I watched as people relived their angsty teenage phase with smiles on their faces. "All I Got" ran appropriate for Valentines Day, as lovers looked into each other’s eyes and put their hands on each other's shoulders.
Oliver Tree emphasized that with this show, he was no longer the opening act and can finally scooter on stage. As the show came to an end, he screamed, "No matter how strange you think you look, you're fucking beautiful. Good night, Los Angeles!"
