Following the release of his two previous singles, Maryland rapper IDK (born Jason Aaron Mills) is back with a sequel to 2018's IDK & FRIENDS. IDK & FRIENDS 2 serves as the soundtrack to Kevin Durant's Basketball County: In the Water showtime documentary, of which IDK is both music supervisor and composer.
Whether you like "Portland"-esque flute instrumentals ("MAZEL TOV"), R&B-tinged ballads ("END OF DISCUSSION"), or spellbinding string arpeggios ("SQUARE UP"), IDK & FRIENDS 2 offers a little something for everyone.
Fresh off a joint album with Florida rapper Smokepurpp, Ronny J also makes an appearance on IDK & FRIENDS 2, lending his production chops to trap banger "TOOTH FAIRY." The two-minute cut is a brief but assertive nod to IDK's songwriting prowess. It includes lines like "When I ball, it's a Net, Kyrie and KD," and "When you ball, it's a call, it's a foul, it's a reach," - both of which make reference to Durant's documentary.
Among the star-studded contributions on IDK & FRIENDS 2, "495" stands out as a clear focal point. Featuring exceptional verses from Rico Nasty and rising emcee Yung Manny, the song captures the synergic finesse that characterizes the majority of the album. "495" serves as a DMV posse cut, enlisting Maryland's Big Flock and Virginia's Big JAM to round out the energetic track.
At its core, IDK's second collaborative mixtape showcases his distinct ability to unify various artists under one cohesive sound. More than a rapper, IDK is a curator, plucking the strongest traits each guest has to offer and threading them together into a tapestry that celebrates the progression of the medium.
