Mulay Shines in New Visual for "ANTRACYTE"
If you haven't yet heard of Mulay, consider this an informal introduction. Synthesizing elements of R&B, electronica and pop, Mulay is a Berlin-based musician with an affinity for the subversive. Her newest single, "ANTRACYTE" accompanies a stunning four-minute visual depicting Mulay as a villainess, juxtaposed against a group of monochromatic figures. Released ahead of her upcoming EP of the same name, Mulay describes "ANTRACYTE" as being thematically, "about facing your own darkness and sins, about self-revelation, emancipation and about paying its price, resigning to your fate".
"ANTRACYTE" begins as a steady piano ballad where Mulay sings "I wanna be fair but love's a game with no rules / When the truth is that I like the way it feels." Her vocal register is powerful as she navigates through a sultry performance one moment, and an impassioned one the next. The track quickly transitions into a beautifully mixed composition of layered harmonies as the skittering percussion is introduced. Though Mulay is surrounded, she walks with confidence as her vocals effortlessly float over drum and piano patterns that feel refreshingly original. Though this track is fairly minimal, Mulay brings an undeniable swagger that shines from her talent and confidence. I won't spoil the end of the visual, but right as it reaches its fever pitch Mulay retreats into the minimal mix that she came in on.
Mulay's upcoming EP ANTRACYTE will be released later thus month, so you should have plenty of time to get to know this song before the others drop. If this visual is an indication of things to come, then I am definitely excited and will be awaiting her next release.
