Eden Rain's "Text Me When You're Home Safe" Is a Striking Ode to Female Friendships [Q&A]

Eden Rain is blessed with one of those stop you in your track voices, a tone that pulls in emotion without constraint or strain. Since debuting last year, Eden has released a string of singles proliferating her self-described "sad bitch songs," landing on a narrative and sound perfectly au courant for post-pandemic life. "Text Me When You're Home Safe" is a song that construed as both appropriate for Women's History Month and a great opportunity to spotlight this artist's intense lyrical-driven style, so we reached out to find out more about this promising talent.

Ones to Watch: Who is Eden Rain?

Eden Rain: I'm trying to figure it out, but at the moment, I'm a Gemini who loves crisps, making music and art about everyone else's drama, those squeezie yogurt things, and hanging out with cats.

Assuming the title isn't self-evident, what is "Text Me When You're Home Safe" all about?

TMWYHS is about a lot of things, but for me, it's about the intensity and protectiveness of female friendships and figuring out where or what home actually is to a person.

The song has this loving, comforting vibe and the visual to match, how'd you settle on the composition?

Thank you! :)) I wanted the song to feel special and familiar, like a walk home from a night out, so I invited some of my female friends to appear in the music video. It was originally inspired by the video for "Bittersweet Symphony."

Any collaborators? Who produced the track?

The genius, Tim Kellett, co-wrote and produced the track. We've made a lot of stuff together and this song came together so seamlessly. The original demo has a lot of noises of us hitting whisky bottles for percussion which was fun. Jackson Ducasse directed and made the video and he's always so amazing at understanding and executing a vision.  Both are wonderful people and friends so working together is always a dream <3

You've only had a few releases but this song seems quintessentially you? How would you describe your sound?

Haha my instinctive response is that I feel like a magpie just collecting all the nice shiny bits of music I like and bringing them back into my studio nest to create something new. So my sound is just a fusion of all the things I love !

Can we expect more of this style in the future, potentially on an upcoming album?

.....Who knows... you just might have to keep your eyes peeled ;)

Besides this excellent single, what else should we be on the lookout for?

Merch, NFTs, art, live shows... the sky is the limit! I really wanted to create a whole world of art and a vision around this single so there are lots of attached bits to come that I'm really excited about.

What's inspiring you right now outside of music?

Watching reality tv at night with my housemates and picking up on everyones gossip,  hahaha that's very inspiring stuff. Also watching Bojack Horseman, going on long walks to get snacks from the Chinese supermarket, blue cheese pasta, the view of the city from my bedroom window, my siblings, and finding old zines from the '90s on Pinterest.

It's Women's History Month, which that seems appropriate for this song release, what's the significance for you?

Oh for sure, I wrote it based off the phrase that my friends and I always say to each other without really thinking about it, but writing that song made me think about the casualness of a phrase that's quite haunting and rings true to so many women. There's so much that needs to change before I (and other women) feel safe going places themselves at night.

Who are your Ones to Watch?
