Lexi Jayde's "Newbury Park" Is a Hypnotic Ode to Heartbreak

This week, rising pop-star Lexi Jayde releases her first single of 2021, "Newbury Park" - a heartbreaking love letter to the unrequited emotions that so frequently pave our most formative years. Though Lexi is a relatively new face in the pop sphere, she has quickly amassed a devoted fanbase following the success of her two 2020 singles, “Oldest Teenager” and “If I Really Love You.” Her power vocal register and affinity for candid songwriting even led her to cross paths with Goody Grace and Cigarettes After Sex on last year's cut, "On Repeat." 2021 is a new year, however, and with the release of "Newbury Park," it certainly seems like Lexi Jayde has the potential to be the next powerhouse of pop.

Though hailing from Southern California, Lexi Jayde's "Newbury Park" is a punchy and polished pop anthem with slight hints of downtempo country-charm. Perhaps it's the steady acoustic guitar progression or the subtle vocal inflections that invariably appear in her earnest writing, but Lexi Jayde seems to effortlessly synthesize the two opposing styles into something bright and brand-new. "Newbury Park" is a clever pop track full of infectiously catchy melodies and ethereal vocal layers that complicate the track's dejected themes of toxic relationships and short-lived romance. With standout lines like "Your favorite passion is letting me down", and the track's chorus "Fuck you for wasting my love", Lexi Jayde paints a heartfelt picture of unrequited love realized through love not reciprocated. Though this is far from the first track illustrating this sort of romantic tension, Lexi Jayde sets herself apart by assuming a powerful position of strength, resilience, and emotional maturity that manifests in the track's final lines, "I'm better off without you / Fuck you for wasting my love." Even when knee-deep in the tribulations of young love, Lexi Jayde looks to the future with a rare sensitivity paired with an inspiring lack of remorse.

It shouldn't be a surprise to listeners of "Newbury Park" that Lexi Jayde has been writing music since the age of six, as her newest single reflects a strong talent for songwriting that is fairly uncommon compared to many of her contemporaries. With a staggering social following under her belt, as well as a history of collaborative efforts with celebrity producers, Lexi Jayde may not be considered a budding talent for much longer. With the release of "Newbury Park," it is only a matter of time until Lexi Jayde reaches music's main stage - but we'll be watching the journey with anticipation.
