renforshort Is at Her Most Vulnerable and Heartfelt in “i miss myself”

We all wear masks every day, and I’m not referring to those of the N-95 variety. The mask, or personality, you show to your family, friends, colleagues, strangers, and so forth can vary by leaps and bounds, and at times, it can become difficult to distinguish which “mask” is the real you. This sense of losing one’s identity as one navigates the world around them builds the emotional crux of renforshort’s latest heartfelt meditation.

“i miss myself” is the latest glimpse into renforshort’s highly-anticipated debut album, dear amelia, set to release July 8. The new single arrives in stark contrast to renforshort’s previous offering “we’ll make this ok,” an electrifying, Travis Barker-assisted affair that saw the rising star detail a poisonous push-and-pull love affair. Instead, in “i miss myself,” she opts for a more vulnerable moment of introspection buoyed by minimalistic instrumentation and production that lets her story of losing herself behind a series of masks take center stage.

“’i miss myself’ is about feeling like you need to be all these other people, until eventually you don’t know who you are anymore. I wanted the song to feel like when you’re having a conversation and trying to stay calm, until you finally can’t hold back anymore and everything just explodes,” shares renforshort.

dear amelia may still be on the horizon, but if “i miss myself” and the singles that preceded it are any indication, we are in store for a debut album that explores the full gamut of the emotional spectrum—dizzying highs, self-affirming lows, and everything in-between.
