Rewind: Our 5 Favorite Music Videos of the Last Week
While it’s far too easy to lose ourselves in the deluge of new music releases that grace us every week, one thing that cannot and should not be overlooked is the art of the music video. With the heyday era of MTV long behind us, Rewind sees us taking a look back at a handful of our favorite music videos of the past week.
Shoffy - "Nightmares in NYC"
We’ve dug Shoffy’s sound for a minute now. He's always been an artist always ahead of the curve musically, but with this video for "Nightmares in NYC," we fell in love all over again with his subdued, poignant sound. Directed by David Dutton this wonderful multi-media video is half postcards from NYC love letter, the other half a wonderful coloring book effect that skillfully tells a story of mental struggle without being overly gratuitous.
AishoNakjima - "DLB"
Don’t like the world? Create your own… and wow, to what effect. Self-described as a film by Matheus Katayama and aided by DP Ali Yokota AishoNakajima's "DLB" is a near indescribable nightmarish, geisha gone wrong moment that is as starling as the song and its blunt lyrics. For its relatively short duration, a Clockwork Orange reeducation occurs that is equal parts startling and impossible to pull always from. 100% a must-watch for those with a visual fetish here.
Alvin Paris - "PWC (Jet-Ski Anthem)"
Meme video? Maybe, possibly, likely guaranteed. But given the freedom artists are afforded when taking on mega proxy personas, Alvin Paris' "PWC (Jet-Ski Anthem)" is interesting for its Eurotrash simplicity. Nuanced in a way mesh tank top and speedo swim caps very specifically allow, this eyeworm of a video has us wanting more than just jets from Alvin.
Saiah - "5 minutes till dawn"
Late to this but worth the delay as Saiah, an incredible emerging talent who never fails to stun musically or visually, does so again in "5 Minutes Till Dawn." In this visualizer, director by Lucas O.M. takes the artist on a journey through a drunken, hazy stroll of rock 'n' roll drama and excess that matches Saiah’s unique aesthetic and dramatic look despite the surrounding stupor.
Andrekza - "Quasimodo"
Ok, we are obviously sweet on this amazing artist, but how couldn’t we be swayed by a young artist creative directing her own videos (assisted by Reinaldo Zavarce) to such glamorous, colorful wonder. Andrekza's "Quasimodo" is a cross between bedroom dreams, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, and American Beauty. Put simply, this visual is sticky candy for your eyes that you can’t stop chewing.
