Sofía Valdés and Pink Sweat$ Deliver ann Empowering Slowburn With "Broken"

With lines like “I won’t dim my light to please your ignorance,” Panamanian songstress Sofía Valdés demands her power back with sultry vocals and a fiery kiss in her latest single, “Broken.”

Featuring a verse from the love-embodied artist Pink Sweat$, “Broken” is a declaration of sovereignty. This indie-pop track has a bite, seeing through the guise of those that await your downfall by knowing they’re only projecting their own self-dissatisfaction.

Coming from a background rich in heritage and musicality, Valdés brings a multilayered depth to everything she touches. She doesn’t shy away from dancing in between genres and sounds, remaining true only to the ever-evolving expression of her Latinx artistry.

The single’s video component, directed by Spike Lee’s daughter, Satchel Lee, adds warmth to a song as sharp as “Broken,” softening its edges. The video features a candlelit dinner party brimming with laughter and lifelong friends; there’s much comfort in its familiarity. Pink Sweat$ seasons the track with sweetness, coloring in its lines with his gentle yet invigorating vocals.

From widespread critical acclaim to being Chanel’s Latin American brand ambassador, Valdés is clearly on the come up, and “Broken” teaches a valuable truth: the brighter you shine, the more uncomfortable those you blind will be, but there’s no use detouring from your destiny to keep anyone else comfortable.
