Cavetown Is Bringing Their Heartwarming Vulnerability to Their Largest Headlining Tour Yet  [Q&A]

UK indie singer-songwriter Cavetown has kicked off their long-awaited US headlining tour, featuring support from Tessa Violet and Addison Grace. Kicking off on March 22 in Buffalo, NY, the 20+ date run will make stops in major cities across the country, including a momentous show at Los Angeles' Hollywood Palladium.

The tour follows the success of the artist’s acclaimed EP Man’s Best Friend and performances at major festivals, including Lollapalooza and Ohana Festival. We had the chance to speak with Cavetown about their headlining tour, recent single “Fall In Love With A Girl,” featuring fellow indie-pop star beabadoobee, and more.

You just kicked off your headlining US tour this week! How are you feeling going into the journey?

I’m excited!! It’s been over two years since my last US tour, which was literally the best time of my life. This run is looking like it’ll be a new winner already.

What are the most fulfilling and most challenging aspects of being back on the road?

At home, I don’t spend a lot of time socializing, so I love getting to spend so much time with my friends on the bus. It’s like a big road trip with besties. At the same time, I’m not used to socializing so much, and it can be hard to get your own space on the road, which can be challenging. It also takes a lot to lead a show on stage as someone who is naturally introverted and anxious, so that takes a bit of getting used to.

What song has been the most fun to play live?

“Devil Town” is sick. For some reason, we never played the original rock-y version until recently, which absolutely slaps. It’s right at the end of the set too (spoiler), so we can go crazy and not feel like we have to conserve energy for more songs.

What do you do in your spare time to unwind when traveling?

It helps to do some stuff that reminds me of my downtime at home, like watching Adventure Time, playing Minecraft, and drawing :)

Is there one particular city you are most excited to visit?

I’m stoked to go back to Toronto!! It’s been forever since I was last there, and I have fond memories of the tiny venue I played when it was just me on my own. The green room was minuscule and had far too many dicks drawn on the walls, and there was someone who came and stood at the back with a huge lemon head-on, which was… unnerving.

How’s Fig handling you being away?

Fig actually lives at my Dad’s place, so he’s chill, but I have my own little kitty called Juno, who lives with me. She’s quite independent and likes her own space, so I think she quite likes having the house to herself, and she has a sitter who comes every day to check on her.

Your most recent release with beabadoobee, “Fall In Love With A Girl,” is such a sweet single! What was it like working with her?

Dude, I love Bea. She is so cool, and it was a real pleasure to have her on a song with me. She and Jacob came to my place when I was living in London - they were both so so friendly, and we just had a great time hanging out and messing around in my studio.

I love the music video y'all made for the single and felt it was really wholesome but deep. How did you come up with the concept?

I worked with the director Chris Fowles to figure out a storyline to tastefully portray a situation song was inspired by, being the difficulties that many queer people face moving beyond a state of denial towards fulling accepting who they are. Chris brought the idea of a kind of possessed dollhouse which sounded super creative. And I think it also conveyed really nicely how no matter how hard you might try to hide who you are, the truth will always follow you, and you can be so happy when you’re ready to embrace it.

What was the most fun or most challenging part of shooting the music video?

The set was a gorgeous vintage-inspired house which was really fun to explore!! Since moving into my first house fairly recently, I’ve been really intrigued by interior design, so I was definitely taking some notes.

Who or what inspires you creatively?

It’s usually the people I care about who inspire the best songs. I can tell I really love someone when something we go through together inspires a banger. Sonically, I find that I subconsciously take inspiration from whoever I’ve been listening to most recently, which tends to rotate pretty regularly. Right now, I’ve been really enjoying artists like Big Thief, Jay Som, and Arlo Parks!

What is your songwriting process like right now? Is it a tried and true method, or is it an ever-evolving process?

It’s all over the place really. Sometimes I’ll sit down with an idea in the morning and just bang out a song in its entirety in a single day, and other times it’ll be more difficult to keep things moving. I really don’t have a science to it figured out; my brain just doesn’t work like that.

Last question, and arguably the most important, what is your go-to road trip snack?

Red seedless grapes.
