Rewind: Our 5 Favorite Music Videos of Last Week
While it’s far too easy to lose ourselves in the deluge of new music releases that grace us every week, one thing that cannot and should not be overlooked is the art of the music video. With the heyday era of MTV long behind us, Rewind sees us taking a look back at a handful of our favorite music videos of the past week.
Personal Trainer - "Rug Busters"
Possibly the single most useful opportunity for a proper large band in creating music videos is group choreography, and Personal Trainer use this OK Go stylized format to kitschy aplomb in their music video for "Rug Busters." Taking nothing but the self-evident personality of the band and a bare warehouse setting, the rapturously fun track finds a perfect home in this imperfect spectacle, worth a watch for the ensuing joy alone.
Jaguar Jonze - "PUNCHLINE"
The music video for "PUNCHLINE" arrives as another atypically excellent effort from the fearless Jaguar Jonze (also directed and edited by JJ). The video never diminishes the powerful narrative of song, with this gorgeously positive visual carrying all the infectious energy one can handle, even going as far as casting real fans to bring the message full circle.
AG Club ft. Junior Varsity - "TRU RELIGION"
Hard not to stan on this in the woods Stranger Things beauty by two of our favorite groups, AG Club and Junior Varsity, who together deliver a beautiful throwback crossover classic in their music video for "TRU RELIGION." While we aren't sure what the visitors are or where they are from, the mystery pairs beautifully with the euphoric live energy on full display.
Lauren Spencer-Smith - "Flowers"
A great concept that doesn't get in the way of showcasing the delicate composition and awe-like voice of Lauren Spencer-Smith, the Val Vega-directed video for "Flowers" compiles some sliding door split screens that tell the highs and lows of young love. Simple and effective, as Spencer-Smith purposely croons between the mixed setting, resulting in a wonderful visual matching the power of the song.
80purppp - "Feel Like / C Royale"
There's a lot to love from this Cordell Jomha-directed collage of jazzy vibes, most notably how stunning the casting is. The video for 80purppp's "Feel Like / C Royale" kicks off with a collection of BTS moments replete with gorgeous of the moment faces before delving into a wonderful brass city cityscape that has a beautiful anti-hero vibe. Love the artist, love the video, love the songs.
