KANADA THE LOOP Talks Akira, Internet Culture and His Debut EP Toyota Reckless
\
KANADA THE LOOP is the personification of 21st century internet culture and its craze. Embodying the chaos of social media and its unbounded hole of discovery, KANADA is navigating his way through the textures of sound and the limitless array of genres. Just in time for the warmer seasons in the southern hemisphere, his debut EP is a nod to just that – mingling traits of electronic, indie, hyper-pop and a tad splash of hip-hop to get you feeling good throughout the season.
Born in Adelaide, now Sydney-sider, KANADA’s music origin is like many others, gathering influence from his parents who were also in the industry. While his dad’s Christian rock band was the main ignition to kick off his journey into producing, his self-direction has steered him into an abundance of freedom, expression and oddly satisfying arrangements. “I was growing up with a lot of bands at churches, which then I got out of that and made my own band. I then kind of just went on my laptop and started producing stuff and then made it my own. It’s hard to describe but it kind of just comes from working on a laptop and seeing what you can make work”.
Simple yet complex, his stage name proves his persona to be unique and straightforward as ever, creating the essence of his name through one of the main characters in Akira – a favourite of KANADA’s. “It really almost came from nowhere. I really liked the movie Akira, if any of y’all haven’t seen that – super good movie, go watch it. One of the main characters is named Kaneda, which I kind of just made that a little more for me. That’s about it, because the rest is literally nothing, no context, nothing you really need to know. I just like it”.
With productions sincere, eccentric, and bop-worthy, it's not hard to grasp onto KANADA’s stories through each track, essentially telling everyone to let loose and give less cares in the world. “I like to make pop music but fix it up a bit and add some hyper-pop, alternative and hip-hop influence in there. I came from more of an emo background, so I also try to incorporate a little of that too, that’s the main things”. Playing by no rules is what he preaches, recklessly blending the lines between genres to create the overall vibe – in the best ways possible.
His latest debut EP Toyota Reckless keeps the momentum going, revealing his overall playfulness he holds closely to him. A hit to unbothered decisions, KANADA explores what it means to be young, wild, and free in his newest release. Facing challenges to make something better than the last, his tracks are as refreshing as ever and flaunt the perfect queue of soundtracks to listen to on the road with the windows down. “I think the main challenge though is trying to be or do something that hasn’t been done before because it’s super easy to copy other people, but at the end of the day you want to be doing something new and something fresh, make something that excites you. Let’s be real the things that excites you is the things that you’ve never heard before”.
An artist to add to your summer playlist, KANADA is undeniably a musician to pick up the mood at any given moment. Whether it be in the shower, to hype you up before a party or even in the car, KANADA THE LOOP should be on the queue. Making waves in the Australian music as we speak, he is without a doubt a Ones To Watch to keep your eyes and ears peeled for.
